Thomas Hawes is a Montréal-born, Québec-based photographer and creative director. His artistic practice explores contemporary questions surrounding masculinity, femininity, mental health, vulnerability, and the emotional and social dynamics that shape human connection. Photography functions for him as both a lens and a language—an intimate means of engaging with these themes while offering something meaningful back to the communities he works within.
Working independently over the years has profoundly shaped his worldview. Thousands of conversations with artists, collaborators, and subjects have expanded his inner life and deepened his understanding of human complexity. He consistently challenges himself to move beyond familiar perspectives, aiming to document not only what is seen, but what is felt. His work seeks to contribute to broader cultural dialogue, often through collaborations with musicians, dancers, artists, designers, nonprofit organizations, and independent creators whose discipline, vulnerability, and clarity of intention inspire his practice.
A self-taught photographer, Thomas has developed his craft through experimentation, persistence, and mentorship. Alongside technical growth, he places strong emphasis on the philosophical and ethical dimensions of image-making. While he has completed several online photography programs, he also dedicates time to studying literature and research on representation, ethics and philosophy.
This research extends beyond technique into moral and conceptual inquiry. It challenges how he perceives, interprets, and represents the world, shaping the questions he asks, the relationships he builds with his subjects, and the responsibility he feels toward the narratives he helps construct. It guides him toward creating work that is not only technically refined but also intentional, considerate, and socially conscious.
